Hyaline eosinophilic cortical astrocytic inclusions in a child with intractable epilepsy

چکیده
The presence of hyaline eosinophilic inclusions in protoplasmic astrocytes of cerebral cortex is a rare finding that is mostly associated with history of intractable epilepsy and cases of Aicardi syndrome. Here, we describe a 17-year-old male who presented with a longstanding history of intractable epilepsy. Microscopic examination of the excisional biopsy of the epileptic focus showed hyaline eosinophilic inclusions within cortical astrocytes. In addition, we discuss the most recent evidence with regards to their pathogenesis.

Child Neurology: Pediatric seizures with hyaline astrocytic inclusions.
Astrocytic dysfunction is implicated in epilepsy through many proposed molecular mechanisms, but there is also a clinicopathologic entity of epilepsy featuring astrocytic inclusions. At least 17 cases of early-onset epilepsy with eosinophilic, hyaline astrocytic inclusions have been reported since the early 1990s. Most of these cases also involve developmental delay. The diagnosis is made by ne...
متن کاملAn In Vitro Model for Lewy Body-Like Hyaline Inclusion/Astrocytic Hyaline Inclusion: Induction by ER Stress with an ALS-Linked SOD1 Mutation
Neuronal Lewy body-like hyaline inclusions (LBHI) and astrocytic hyaline inclusions (Ast-HI) containing mutant Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) are morphological hallmarks of familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (FALS) associated with mutant SOD1. However, the mechanisms by which mutant SOD1 contributes to formation of LBHI/Ast-HI in FALS remain poorly defined. Here, we report induction of...
متن کاملHyaline protoplasmic astrocytopathy of neocortex.
Eosinophilic inclusions in the cytoplasm of protoplasmic astrocytes of the neocortex, usually in the clinical setting of epilepsy and/or psychomotor retardation, were first recognized and illustrated by Alois Alzheimer in 1910. Traditional special stains have failed to elucidate the specific nature of these inclusions. Ultrastructurally, the material was composed predominantly of highly electro...
متن کاملPresurgical Language Mapping in Patients With Intractable Epilepsy: A Review Study
Introduction: about 20% to 30% of patients with epilepsy are diagnosed with drug-resistant epilepsy and one third of these are candidates for epilepsy surgery. Surgical resection of the epileptogenic tissue is a well-established method for treating patients with intractable focal epilepsy. Determining language laterality and locality is an important part of a comprehensive epilepsy program befo...

INTRODUCTION We report a case of Rhabdoid meningioma in an eight-year-old child which is the fifth case in the world according to our knowledge. MATERIAL AND METHOD An 8-year-old girl was seen in our University Clinic of Neurosurgery with one month history of increasing headaches, vomiting and increasing frequency of grand mal seizures (known history of epilepsy). Her past medical history was...
